UV protection, ultraviolet protection factor
The fabric blocks over 98% of UVA and UVB rays. The highest UV protection rating recognised by European testing laboratories for textiles.
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is the parameter that measures how effectively a fabric blocks the sun's ultraviolet rays. A garment rated UPF 50+ lets less than 2% of UV radiation through — the same principle as SPF for sunscreens, applied to textiles.
European standard EN 13758-1 is the reference for UPF certification on fabrics. A UPF of 15–24 provides good protection (93–95% UV blocked), 25–39 offers very good protection (96–97%), and 40+ is classified as excellent (>97.5%). UPF 50+ is the highest level: it filters over 98% of rays, both UVA and UVB. The rating depends on fabric density, colour (darker = more protective), composition (polyester > cotton) and thickness. Note that the index decreases when the fabric is wet. On caps and garments rated UPF 50+, the key benefit is protection of the scalp, nape and neck — areas often missed by sunscreen.
