Definition

Ripstop is a technical fabric constructed by weaving thicker yarns at regular intervals, forming a visible micro-grid. This structure arrests tear propagation: if the fabric is damaged, the tear stays localised instead of spreading.

Originally developed for military and aerospace use (parachutes), ripstop combines lightness with high mechanical strength. The reinforcing grid — in nylon or polyester heavier than the base yarn — is visible to the naked eye and becomes a recognisable aesthetic feature. Across garments and accessories, ripstop is found in outdoor and military models and technical bucket hats; in bags it ensures durability without added weight; in rPET ripstop versions, lightness combines with sustainability credentials. The slightly textured surface is compatible with screen printing and embroidery; sublimation is not recommended on nylon.
