Definition

Ribbed knit is a textile structure produced by alternating knit and purl stitch columns. The result is a fabric with visible vertical ribs, with high lateral elasticity that adapts to different sizes without losing shape.

This structure appears either throughout the entire beanie body (classic versions) or only at the lower edge or cuff, where it provides the necessary hold. The inherent elasticity of ribbed knit eliminates the need for additional elastic bands. On fully ribbed beanies, embroidery requires a non-woven backing (stabiliser) to lock the stitch during sewing and prevent the knit from distorting. Ribbed knit is distinct from corduroy (also called cord), which is a woven fabric and not elastic.
