Definition

Jacquard is a weaving or knitting technique in which the design is created directly within the yarn interlacing, using different yarn colours. The pattern is an integral part of the fabric structure and does not separate from the garment or fade with washing.

Unlike printing (colour applied to the surface) or embroidery (colour added on top), jacquard builds the design during production. The technique is common in classic winter beanies (Christmas, geometric and diamond patterns) and in caps with patterned panels, where it creates visual and chromatic texture of superior quality. Production costs are higher than for a plain-colour piece because the jacquard loom requires specific programming. Note: post-production customisation on jacquard is limited because an embroidered logo is superimposed on an already complex background; many brands prefer to incorporate the logo directly into the jacquard pattern at the sampling stage.
