Definition

Fleece is a polyester knit fabric with a brushed inner surface that traps air for thermal insulation. It is lightweight, dries quickly and, in rPET versions, is produced from recycled plastic bottles.

Fleece is classified by weight: 100 g/m² (lightweight, for layering), 200 g/m² (mid-weight, the most common), 300 g/m² (heavyweight, for intense cold). In beanies, accessories and winter garments it appears as an internal microfleece lining for comfort without bulk. Brands such as Polartec® have developed fully recycled certified versions. From a customisation standpoint, the fleece surface is not suitable for direct screen printing; embroidery is possible but requires a stabilising backing; heat-transfer DTF is the preferred technique.
