It has the body of a shop-bought T-shirt: the base on which creators and bands build their merch. Heavyweight cotton knit, 190 g/m², certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for harmful substances. Screen printing and embroidery are its signature; on dark colours digital printing needs the fabric sprayed with a primer. Terracotta, Petroleum blue, Folk red: 53 colours, for a welcome kit too. It also comes for women and children: Imperial Women and Imperial Kids.

1 min readHow we analyse products

A T-shirt that is for sale gets judged by the hands before the eyes. The Imperial is the Regent with forty grams more: same construction, semi-combed cotton jersey (part of the short fibres removed) at 190 g/m², and SOL'S names it among the reference T-shirts for this weight. The body is a tube of knit with no side seams, the ribbed collar, in raised lines kept springy by elastane, has a reinforcing tape, and the seams at the collar, sleeves and hem are doubled. It is a customisable heavyweight T-shirt in 53 colours, certified, meaning tested for harmful substances, and PETA-Approved Vegan.

The extra weight changes the rules for . SOL'S lists it alongside , digital printing, heat transfer and heat-applied vinyl, and at 190 g/m² we are in the range we recommend: a solid logo on the chest stays flat. For a collection to sell we go for screen printing, which on smooth jersey gives full colours even on large graphics. Direct-to-garment printing is there for short runs and photographs. On Ash and Grey , which contain viscose, a wood-based fibre, a test should come before the run.

Print compatibility

Printing techniques.
A verdict for each one.

What to expect on this specific product, technique by technique.

Offered by SOL'S, and it is the technique of a collection made to sell: one screen per colour, solid inks and, as the manufacturer points out, the option of special effects. The jersey, the classic T-shirt knit, here heavy and smooth, holds a large graphic on the back well. On dark colours SOL'S specifies a white base, a layer of white ink printed under the colours so they stay bright.

Here embroidery stops being a compromise. For T-shirts we recommend 180-200 g/m², and the Imperial has 190: the jersey carries a solid logo on the chest without puckering. SOL'S also lists it raised, with padding; for that we suggest at least 200-240 g/m², so we would keep it to thick, small letters.

Imperial

It is the garment for anyone who puts their name on a T-shirt and charges for it: the creator on a first drop, the band on tour, the craft brewery with its own taproom shop. It is not the right choice for giveaways handed out by the hundred, where the extra weight is not needed: for that there is the Regent, 150 g/m² and ten sizes. Before ordering: XS, 4XL and 5XL exist in some colours only, and the cut is men's.

Ideal2

A creator's audience touches the T-shirt before deciding whether to buy again. 190 g/m² makes a substantial garment, and fifty-three colours allow a recognisable palette, from Terracotta to Petroleum blue.

At the merch stand after the gig, fans buy a souvenir and want a garment they will wear long after the night. A screen print on the back with the tour dates, on a heavyweight cotton knit of 190 g/m², is the classic format.

Sustainability

Declared certifications.
And what they guarantee.

2 declared certifications

We list only third-party certifications declared by the manufacturer: some concern the environment, others the safety of substances or working conditions.

Certifies that every component of the finished product — fabric, stitching, buttons, labels, prints — has been tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances. Guarantees that what you wear contains nothing chemically dangerous to health. It says nothing about how the product was manufactured, by whom, or with what environmental impact: other certifications exist for those verifications. It is the world's most widely used and rigorous chemical safety standard for finished textile products.
