Definition

The hat cord is an element running around the base of the crown, between the crown and the peak or brim. It can be purely decorative (adding visual character) or functional (keeping the hat on the head or allowing adjustments).

On outdoor and military models the cord is often braided nylon, acting as a chin retention cord or drawstring for volume adjustment. On lifestyle and heritage models (safari hats, summer bucket hats) a cotton or twisted cord is an aesthetic element evoking traditional style. From a customisation perspective, the hat cord is a replaceable component: some manufacturers offer custom-coloured cords as an additional branding option.
